This is the year. As the end of January was approaching I remember scrolling through my Instagram feed which is most-often populated by humans catching trout all over the world, a comment caught my eye. One of the accounts I follow stated that they had set a goal to bring a trout to hand at the very least once a month.
Yes. A worthy goal.
Several years ago – a younger husband and father to a young family – I had an incident at work where I nearly passed out in front of my class. That semester I was going through a lot it turned out, and the stress of life and work had caught up to me. Without going into all the details – I needed help in a variety of ways. In talking with my amazing and understanding wife, one thing that I was able to commit to was taking a day once a month for me. It seemed like a commitment that I could handle. And so I did what I could for a while – my mental state improved – until things changed again.
With a job change and different responsibilities – I’m sorry to say that I did not keep up with my commitment to myself. It’s understandable, but disappointing. After all, this is nothing crazy – my favorite thing to do is fish, for trout, preferably wild in a natural setting. So after a year of not getting out at all with a fly rod – as I approached the end of January this year, I said enough is enough. I can do this. I want to do this. I need to do this.
So I am. Once a month I am committing myself to a walkabout experience, in the woods, fly fishing for wild trout. And in time – I hope it starts a movement and you join me.
